In 1938, Achille Gaggia invented the modern espresso machine, where water is pressurized by a hand-operated piston, instead of steam pressure. It wasn't until 1946 (after WWII) that the machine was finally commercialized. In 1947, the Gaggia company was founded.

Note to self: It's eSpresso, not eXpresso.
