Between 1978 and 1987, Classic Space sets were the only thing in the Lego Space universe. In 1987 two new series were introduced: Futuron and Blacktron. Despite three years of overlap when both Futuron and Classic sets were on sale, Futuron is the natural successor to Classic Space; the Futuron space suits even reused the Classic Space logo!

The Futuron series was enormously advanced compared to the Classic Space series. Light and Sound bricks were used for the first time in the Space theme in the Light & Sound Lunar Transporter Patroller (6770).

In 1988 two particularly neat sets caught my eye. The Twin-Winged Spoiler (6828) and the Strategic Pursuer (6848). Both were one-minifig sets which looked like cool little mecha. The Twin-Winged Spoiler parks on two legs which bend out into wings. The Strategic Pursuer is even cooler, and has a control pod (in which a controlling minifig sits) above jointed legs. These are truly cool. Also of note is the magnificent and ever-popular Monorail Transport System (6990). A monorail. A Futuron base. Who could want more?
