Furosemide is a powerful diuretic that acts on the kidneys to increase urination.

Often it is administered for people who have some form of kidney failure, heart failure or to remove water accumulation from tissues (in rare cases). It is also used to remove mammary tissue in dogs suffering from false pregnancy.

Recently, furosemide made headlines when two rhythmic gymnasts tested positive for the drug at the 2001 Goodwill Games.
