Fladell was the first lawsuit filed in the wake of the 2000 U.S. presidential election. The plaintiffs alleged that the Palm Beach County Canvassing Board misled voters by issuing confusing "butterfly ballots" where votes intended for Al Gore ended up in the hands of Pat Buchanan. Three separate complaints were filed in circuit court in Palm Beach County, Florida on November 8, 2000, the day after the election, and the suit grew with the incorporation of four more complaints the next day.
Gore's lawyers argued that another election was necessary to remedy the situation. George W. Bush's team argued that the ballots were perfectly fine, and that they had even been designed and approved by a Democrat panel.
The case was decided on November 20, 2000, when a Republican judge, Jorge Labarga, ruled that the court could not order a new election in Palm Beach. Gore's legal team appealed the decision to the more liberal Florida Supreme Court, which upheld the verdict on December 1, 2000.
