A marker or markers used as a means of identification.

  • In humans "the fingerprint" is the groves and curves found on the tips of the fingers.

  • In Security speak a system can be "fingerprinted" in many ways. Nmap is a scanning tool that uses mainly differentiation in the TCP/IP stacks of OSs to ID them.
