A band that exists on in the sense of fictional works such as movies, books, and TV shows but has no real presence in the real world. So they really exist in the sense that there are real muscians and producers out there making the music but not really real. Clear as mud?

Being fictional, they are often used to directly enhance the story or themes in the fiction they are found. Sometimes a band under a fictional guise is free to take a difference stance which leads to more and better artistry. They also maybe used to poke fun too with parody.

Here is a short list of some fictional bands in no particular order and hopefully refactored and edited as time, my memory, and help from other noders permit:

  • Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
  • The Beatles where worried they were in a rut and didn't want to end up stuck with "The Beatle Sound". So the idea was pretend to be another band and perform like them!
  • Stillwater
  • The band featured in the movie Almost Famous. Cameron Crowe made them an amalgamation of several classic rock groups such as Allman Brothers Band and Led Zeppelin.
  • Seatbelts
  • The future (think 2050 AD ish) progressive jazz group responsible for the music found in Cowboy Bebop.
  • The Traveling Wilburys
  • A band made up of real stars and talent. Check out the node to see who Lucky, Otis , Charlie T. Jr, Lefty, and Nelson Wilbury really are!
  • Spinal Tap
  • Of course the documentary This is Spinal Tap tells you all about them!
  • Barry Jive and his Uptown Five
  • The band in High Fidelity that used to be Sonic Death Monkey and just on the verge of becoming Kathleen Turner Overdrive...
  • The Rutles
  • I've never heard or seen their stuff but they evidently sound just like another famous band.
  • Jem and The Holograms
  • A cartoon evidently full of fictional bands. Hurm...I watched G.I. Joe so I'm not an expert on this one. Better follow the node for more info.
  • Gorillaz
  • Thanks to asterphage for point them out to me. Especially since the Gorillaz are much more than the 4 publically seen characters, they most certainly qualify for listing in this node.
  • Wyld Stallyns
  • First featured in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure as the band that will create the music the future world will base society upon. Thanks again asterphage.

ps. No matter how much you want to believe it, N'Sync and the like don't count!
