Italian racing cyclist, winner of the men's road race at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, the last time it was run as a purely amateur event. Riding as a professional in 1995, he was killed as a result of head injuries in a crash on the descent of the Col de Portet d'Aspet in the Pyrenees during stage 15 of the Tour de France. The immediate aftermath of the crash was shown on live television - the whole stage was being shown live, and the bad news came through as the race was still in progress. He left a wife and a new-born baby son.
