Forward-looking infrared is, well, an infrared device that scans the panorama in front of it. It is specifically used in military applications as a device for guiding projectiles to their target. It is used, for example, on the Lockheed F117 instead of RADAR becase targeting with RADAR is like painting a big 'ol bullseye on your ass.
