Elizabeth Barrett Browning was a famous poet in the 1800's. She was born in Durham,
England
and educated at home. She learned many languages including
Greek
and
Latin
at an early age. Her father arranged for the printing of her first poem in 1819 while she was at the age of 13. In 1821, Elizabeth injured her spine as a result of a fall and spent most of her time in her room writing poetry until 1844 when
Robert Browning
wrote to Elizabeth admiring her Poems. They were engaged in 1845 and wed secretly in 1846. The couple ran off to
Italy
where Elizabeth's health improved and they remained there for the rest of her life. In 1850, Elizabeth's best known book of poems was published. These were 44 sonnets recording the growth of her
love
for Robert. In 1861, Elizabeth Barrett Browning died at the age of 55. Her son, born 1849, and Robert returned to England after her death. For examples of Elizabeth's work, see
