Eiko Ishioka was born in Tokyo and graduated from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. She has won numerous awards including an Academy Award for costume design for Bram Stoker's Dracula, the 1985 Cannes Film Festival Award for Artistic Contribution for her production design of Paul Schrader’s film Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters, a Tony nomination for the stage and costume design of the Broadway play M. Butterfly, and a Grammy Award for the artwork of Miles DavisTutu. She was also the costume designer for the movie The Cell. Her first foray into directing was on Björk's video for Cocoon.
