Edmond Hoyle (1672 - 1769) was a British writer who wrote much about the card and board games that existed at that time. Little is known of him prior to 1741 (it is even uncertain if his birth-year is 1671 or 1672 though the majority list 1672). Very little about his life itself is recorded (you just go glance at the Encarta article about him). Despite this, his namesake lives on with "according to Hoyle" meaning the right and proper way of doing something. A line of books about card and board games continues to bear his name and remains current.

Edmond Hoyle died August 29, 1769 and is buried at Old Parish Church of St. Marylebone in London, England.
