dup

A term in drumspeak signifying the sound made when one drum stick strikes the drum head. Conventionally, a dup is one quarter note long, but it can respresent any one note that takes up the same space in a measure as the two notes in a diga. (See also: chup)

  Duplicates the top element on the stack. Since almost all words remove their arguments from the stack, this is a very useful word. Sample usage:

     : SQUARE ( x -- x-squared ) DUP * ;
  

• (UN*X:)
  System call to create a duplicate of an open file descriptor. Used mainly in conjunction with fork() to attach a subprocess' standard input or standard output to other files (or pipes); using dup2 is usually more convenient, though.

The DUP are Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party, a minority but hardline unionist party with links to protestant fundamentalism. Their leader is the Rev. Ian Paisley.
