The Nintendo 64
version of Doom
. Surprisingly, it's not just a direct port of the DOS
version. All the levels and the majority (if not all) of the artwork is brand new. Much of the sprite
art is inferior to the PC originals. The new Demon
) look cool though. The game mechanics are roughly identical. The game contains elements from Doom 1 and 2, and unlike the PC games, the viewpoint does not seem to be locked to an "upright" plane - in the introduction a camera swoops around a large open level, then zooms out (and "up") to reveal the level is a huge DooM
The architecture is typically slightly more detailed than the original Doom levels. The map function is similar to that in Duke Nukem 3D.
By way of comparison, Quake on the N64 was almost totally identical to the PC version, and all the other console ports of Doom (PSX, 32X, SNES, etc.) were usually cut-down versions of Doom 1, with most of the original assets intact. Doom 64 compares very unfavourably to GoldenEye.
