| My mother took my brother and me to see Doctor Zhivago in 1965. In Ontario at that time children my and my brother's age, six years younger than me, were not expected to watch movies like that--at least in Ottawa. Things are so different now.
She told the attendant, ever-watchful guardian of morality, that my brother and I were interested in Russian music and architecture, which we were--and are. We got in.
Starring Omar Sharif as the Doctor, and, I think Judy Darling as Lara, it was a long movie. The Russian Revolution was a long affaire.
I do remember the music, by Maurice Jarre, not a Russian, to be sure, but Russianesque.
I do remember Zhivago trying to call to Lara at the end, when his voice failed--and he died. |
