Sixth Century British soldier, monk and saint. Although most of the history of post-Roman Britain is poorly documented and shrouded in myth and legend, it seems highly likely that Derfel Cadarn (meaning "Derfel the Strong") did actually live. Initially a soldier during the wars against the Saxon invaders, Derfel Cadarn may well have been a key warlord of King Arthur. He is certainly believed to have been at the battle of Camlann where Arthur (if he lived) was finally defeated, after which Derfel appears to have become a monk within the Celtic church, and finally a saint, possibly dying around 560 AD.
