A very delicate algae crust that grows on soil surfaces, it holds moisture and prevents erosion. Found growing on the Colorado Plateau.

Please do not touch or step on the soil, tracks through a bed of crypto biotic soil, will take years to re-grow. It is a very important part of the desert ecology.
