The Cruciatus curse is used by a mid to high level spell caster to cause extreme pain to his / her target. Typically used to torture a person into revealing secrets, force them to do something without the use of the Imperius curse, or general revenge. The Cruciatus Curse is one of the Unforgivable Curses.
