An African-American writer, scholar, and revolutionary whose book Race Matters first brought him to national attention with its critical evaluation of the African-American involvement in the riots in Los Angeles in 1992.

West has lectured extensively, cowritten a book with bell hooks about Black intellectuals, and written a few more on his own about philosophy and ethics most often using Marxist theory as his starting point.
