A form of mass transit, mainly used to carry workers from their homes in the suburbs to the offices and factories of the city. In the US, commuter rail is most common in the largest of cities; the area around New York City has the largest by far, consisting of three separate rail systems (Metro North, Long Island Rail Road, and NJ Transit).

Other US cities that have commuter rail systems include Philadelphia, PA; Boston, MA; Washington, D.C., Baltimore (which shares MARC with Washington), Los Angeles and Chicago.
