Handel's Messiah, Part I, no. 2

Recitative for tenor. Larghetto e piano.

Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry ubto her, that her warfare is accomplish'd, that her iniquity is pardon'd. The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness: Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
Isaiah 40:1-3

This is the first sung piece in Messiah, and sets the scene for the story of redemption which is to follow.

Meditation: O pray for the peace of Jerusalem. (Psalm 122:6) Remember the places in the world where there is warfare in the name of religion. War is not the desire of the Prince of Peace. Let us build highways in the wildernesses of man's creation for one another: that we may all know that we are children of God.
