Surgical removal of the gallbladder. This is the most common treatment for gallstones (cholelithiasis) and infection of the gallbladder (cholecystitis). These days, this is usually done laparoscopically (called laparoscopic cholecystectomy) , though in the past, an open cholecystectomy was the preferred method.
