Canine otitis externa is inflammation and infection of the outer ear canal of a dog. Certain breeds are predisposed to the condition: those with floppy ears and/or long, hairy ear canals tend to trap moisture in this anatomical structure, creating a fertile environment for yeasts and bacteria.

The condition has been described as stinky ear syndrome because of the stench produced by the proliferating microorganisms.
