CINCLANT is a U.S. Military Acronym which stands for Commander In Chief, AtLANTic. This officer (either a U.S. Navy or U.S. Air Force officer) is in command of the U.S. Atlantic Command, a unified command for all operations in, above, under and around the periphery of the Atlantic Ocean. This is an important post; in the event of war in Europe, CINCLANT would have been (or would be) responsible for all operations in the Atlantic in support of that conflict as well as the protection of the SLOCs to maintain contact with forces abroad. This position ranks above CINCLANTFLT, CINCLANTAF and their respective commands, and would work to support SACEUR's forces however possible as well as to defend the East Coast of the United States and allied nations.
