British musical ideal

Most British music seems to share a common musical ideal: a paper dry, crystal clear sound, which stresses the individual musical lines and the harmony between voices and instruments, and avoids melodramatic effects such as echo or vibrato.

This approach, typical of British performances of baroque music (listen to Emma Kirkby), extends just as well to popular music (the Britpop sound), which is mostly due to the work of Beatles producer George Martin.
