A term applied to a short, blunt criticism. Often paired with bouquet to describe a mixutre of the good and the bad: bouquets and brickbats. This is presumably because either item may be thrown, depending on one's intent.

Brick"bat` (?), n.

A piece or fragment of a brick. See Bat, 4.
