In
Norse Mythology, Bragi is the god of
eloquence and
poetry and the
patron of
poets.
Odin and
Frigg regard him as their son and he was Odin's chief poet. His
speech is the fairest and his
tongue the most
witty and
cunning of all the gods as there are runes on it. He inspires poetry in
humans by letting them drink from the
mead of poetry. It is his
duty to prepare
Valhalla for
new arrivals. It is worth noting that Bragi was not always considered a god. He was a poet in the 9th century named Bragi Boddason and later poets penned him into the pantheon.
Before Norse
kings ascended the throne, they drank from the
Bragarfull ("Cup of Bragi"). The Bragarfull was also used for the swearing of
oaths and drinks were taken from it to honor dead kings.
He is also the
husband of
Ithunn, the
goddess of
eternal life.
