A pretty intense movie starring Ice Cube as Doughboy and Cuba Gooding Jr. as Tre Styles; two boyhood friends who grow up together in South Central. The movie is actually extremely good from sociological points of view on many levels. Intermittently between its demographic draws and buzz-word type stuff, it manages to talk deeply about friendship, parenting, the hood, and dealing with problems like death and anger. Unfortunately the name of the director alludes me at this moment, although I can clearly picture the black and white distinguished-looking portrait of him they ran in Vibe.

"Either they don't know, don't show, or don't care about what's going on in the hood."

update: John Singleton was the director, and this was his first movie.
