It is the focal point of attention during most services, and it is considered an honor to be called up to the bimah to read or give a blessing. Only competent Jewish adults are eligible - and in very conservative circles only competent Jewish male adults are eligible.

make sure you're referring to conservative in the sense of the word, not the jewish classification of it. in my conservative congregation at home, we are quite egalitarian and have fully equal rights for anyone post bar/bat-mitzvah.
