Since 1998 or thereabouts, the Royal County of Berkshire has ceased to exist in any administrative sense: it was replaced by several 'unitary authorities' (whatever they are) based around the county's largest towns (Slough, Reading, Newbury).

Staines, home of Ali G, is not in Berkshire but in the nearby London borough of Spelthorne.
