A translation of the Japanese word "hishiryo". In the Fukanzazengi, Dogen zenji describes the practice of zazenas bringing together thinking ("shiryo") and not-thinking ("fushiryo")by being "Before Thinking". This means to open attention past the coming and going of thoughts to the context of knowing in which these contents arise.
