Exagerated reverence for William Shakespeare. A term popularized by George Bernard Shaw. Shaw was undoubtedly envious of Shakespeare's reputation as the finest poet and playwright of the English language.

On the other hand, it's possible to sympathize with Shaw's exasperation. A writer can be the best in his/her field and still not deserve to be an object of idolatry.
