Ασωπος
The god of the river of the same name. Writers claim that he was the son of Poseidon and Pero, of Zeus and Eurynome, or, like all other rivers, of Oceanus and Tethys. He married Metope, the daughter of the river Ladon, and fathered two sons named Ismenus and Pelagon and twenty daughters. Diodorus gives the names of only twelve: Corcyra, Salamis, Aegina, Pirene, Cleone, Thebe, Tanagra, Thespia, Asopis, Sinope, Oenia (or Ornia) and Chalcis. His is also in some accounts said to be the father of Antiope, in her turn the mother of Zathus and Amphion, and Plataea, after whom the city is named (see ISMENE and AEGINA).
