Arthur Bremer

Attempted assassin of George Wallace, 1972. The incident occurred on the eve of Maryland's Democratic Party presidential primary - Wallace was campaigning at a shopping center; Bremer shot the governor, leaving him a paraplegic. Wallace returned to Alabama, and won two more elections over the next decade; he mellowed, and was no longer the publicity-seeking segregationist of old - either a grudging adaptation to New South reality, or the real George finally showing up. Your pick.
