Anton V. Webern was a composer of atonal music. He was born December 3, 1883 in Vienna, and was shot and killed on September 15, 1945 by an American soldier in Mittersill, Austria during World War II.

He had over 75 works published, some of which were less than two minutes long. His music was a major influence on the modern musical world. Anton studied at the University of Vienna, where he obtained a degree in musicology at the age of 23. He was a student of Arnold Schoenberg, the largest defender of the serial method of composition. This technique differed completely from the more known rules of harmony, because it was dodecaphonic; each of the twelve musical tones were treated on an equal basis. This method of harmony is also called atonal. During the Second World War, the Nazis banished works of Webern completely.
