This nonprofit organization is the second largest producer and distributor of public radio in the United States, after National Public Radio.

Its programs are carried on 800 radio stations reaching 17 million listeners. APR owns and operates 49 of those stations (via its networks, Minnesota Public Radio, Southern California Public Radio, and Classical South Florida).

APR's flagship program is Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion.

It also produces the news program Marketplace (and its spinoffs Marketplace Morning Report, Marketplace Money, Marketplace Tech Report). Other notable programs that it produces include On Being, American RadioWorks, The Story, Performance Today, SymphonyCast, The Splendid Table, Composers Datebook and The Writer's Almanac.

It owns the distribution rights to the BBC World Service, so if you hear the BBC News, Public Affairs, or Music program on an American radio station, that's due to APR.

Created in 1967 as Minnesota Public Radio, the organization has won hundreds of broadcasting and journalism awards, including the Peabody and the Grammy.
