The alkaline battery is different from 'normal' batteries in that they have an alkaline electrolyte. This electrolyte usually consists of potassium hydroxide. The positive electrode is made from manganese oxide while the negative consists of zinc oxide.

The alkaline battery has a larger effective temperature range than normal batteries, and can be used between -30°C and 70°C. It also has a higher energy capacity. This means that the alkaline battery can supply higher currents, over longer time. Because of this the alkaline battery has become very popular, and is rapidly becoming the leading battery type on the market.
