Alfred V. Aho is most commonly known for being one of the authors of the "dragon book" (a.k.a. Compilers: Principles, Techniques and Tools) along with Ravi Sethi and Jeffrey D. Ullman. Aho is also one of the creators of the programming language AWK, along with Peter Weinberger and Brian Kernighan (the name AWK is derived from the first letter of their last names).

Aho got his PhD from Princeton University in 1967, and is currently research vice president at Bell Labs, and continues to be part of Columbia University's Computer Science department.
