Alfonso Arau began his career as a dancer and drama student and studied under Seki Sano and was a classmate with Less Strassberg in Russia all before becoming famous as an actor/director. From 1964 to 1968, Arau traveled around the world with his one-man show, Pantomine Happy Madness.

Arau later moved to acting on screen and made his first feature film Barefoot Eagle in 1969, which he directed and had the lead role in. He has acted and directed in many films in Mexico. Arau also has played the villan in several films including, Romancing the Stone and The Three Amigos. He has won 10 Arieles, which are the Mexican equivalent to the Oscar.
