ADONI-BEZEK
(ah doh' nee bee' zek) HEBREW: ADONI-BEZEK
"lord of Bezek" or "my lord is Bezek"
_______________

The ruler of the city of Bezek in southern Canaan who bore the title Adoni-bezek was overthrown soon after the death of Joshua, when the tribes of Judah and Simeon attacked Adoni-bezek's forces and apparently defeated them with ease. The king was then sentenced to a punishment he himself had often meted out to those he conquered - his thumbs and great toes were cut off, effectively ending his life as a warrior, since he could no longer use weapons or pursue a fleeing enemy. "As I have done," he admitted, "so God has requited me" (Jg. 1:7). Adoni-bezek died shortly after his men brought him to Jerusalem.
