Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz is a leading modern ic scholar. The author of over 60 books on the Talmud, Jewish mysticism, sociology, historical biography, and philosophy, he is most noted for having published a translation of the entire Talmud into a clear, elucidated Hebrew. In his edition of the Talmud, one side of the page is in the original Aramaic: a terribly crypic, openended shorthand. The other side retains the Aramaic words, but inserts Hebrew words to clarify references and logical connections. Rabbi Steinsaltz is the founder of the Israel Institute for Talmudic Publications. In Israel, he refers to himself by his Hebrew name, Even Yisrael (the rock of Israel).
