Maryland statute of 1649 that granted
religious freedom to all
Christians, but not to
Jews or
atheists (or anyone else who denied the divinity of Jesus, for that matter).
Basically, an attempt by the
Catholics in Maryland to combat the possible
persecution they might receive at the hands of the increasing numbers of
Protestants running around.
