Currently (read the date) the common standard is AGP 4x at the better part of 1 GB/sec, with 8x in the design phase by intel. AGP slots are found on many machines; most x86 machines, newer Macintoshes and even high end *nix workstations.

AGP has some really nice features like the System Memory Apature and Sideband addressing.
