A RISC processor created by Motorola. I would see it as a successor to the 68000. Although, they differ in design and programming model.

The 88000 wasn't as succesful, this becasue Motorola dropped it in favour of the PowerPC alliance. Together with IBM and Apple, Motorola created the PowerPC line of processor. This chip was based on IBM's POWER design and the I/O part was based on the 88000's architecture.

Also known as the M88000 or MC88000
