A substitution for $0.02 or two cents used often in Usenet newsgroups by Macintosh users to show off the fact that they have option keys on their keyboards and don't have to memorize some esoteric character number or use a character-finding program. Ironically, oftentimes it doesn't show up as 2¢ on other platforms due to different text encodings.
