  • The volcanic island of Thera in the Agean Sea may have had a massive erruption which destroyed much of the island. This dating derrives from Egyptian documents referring to a tsunami in this year, presumably volcanic in origin. However, recent evidence from ice cores and tree rings suggests that the erruption occurred much earlier, in 1628 BC.
