10baseT is actually a classification of the Ethernet specification.

  • Uses either Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) or Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) cabling.
  • The maximum segment length using UTP is 100 meters, 200 for the STP.
  • The theoretical maximum length of a 10baseT system is 2.5 kilometers.
  • The transfer rate of data over the medium is 10Mbps, or 10 million bits per second.
  • The minimum cable rating is Category Three (CAT3). Most of the cabling used now is actually CAT5, which allows 355Mbps theoretically. If you upgraded your hardware, the wiring would not have to be replaced, as long as your RJ45 jacks were rated at CAT5.
  • There is a maximum of 1024 nodes or devices on a single network.
  • There are exactly two devices per cable (one on each end)
