Oceanside, California's oldest restaurant, the 101 Cafe was established in 1928. The building was last remodeled in the 1950s and has the authentic, unpretentious feel of a diner from that era that modern 50s-themed restaurants just can't capture.

The cafe is a low white building on the Pacific Coast Highway about thirty to forty-five minutes north of San Diego and maybe an hour and a half south of Los Angeles. The clientele is varied, ranging from teenagers to families to old bearded surfer guys shooting the breeze. They're open from 6:30 A.M. till midnight and serve excellent chocolate malteds. Whenever we've stopped in we've found the employees to be friendly and courteous, and happy to recommend locations of interest in the city.
