The great grand daddy of all emoticons. This was first proposed On April 12, 1979 by Kevin MacKenzie on the MsgGroup. It was proposed to be used to make e-mail less dry by adding emotions to the list.

-) was used to mean "Tongue-in-cheek". Essentially it is the first known instance of a smiley face. :P
