The control character I wish I had known about years ago. Under most any UNIX system, and perhaps other OSes, ctrl-v lets you specify a second character, which it magically transforms into a control character. For example, pressing "^V G" would insert a control-g into your typing, making the bell ring when the text is processed. Trés cool!
