I know what a Markov chain is, and I have a very hard time decoding the terminology and notation above. Hopefully this writeup will help those who don't yet have a Ph.D. in Mathematics understand what a Markov chain is, and how they work.

Named after the Russian mathematician, Andrey Markov, a Markov chain is basically a structure in which future states or statuses depend only on the current state - past states are not considered when deciding what to do next. These future states are determined through probability.

While Markov chains have uses in physics, statistics, economics, biology, gambling, sports, and more, this writeup will deal with the more fun aspect - generating (semi-) meaningful/coherent sentences from existing text. In any case, the concepts are the same: Forget where you were. You are here now. Decide where to go next.

E2D2 is a chatterbox bot written in C# by in10se. He is named after the lovable droid from Star Wars, R2-D2¹. While he was lurking in the catbox for about a week or so before this, he said his first words in the catbox on May 8, 2009 by giving a karma update. Creating a bot was something I wanted to do long before the days of Donginger, but Senso got to it first, and more than one bot on E2 is too many. Now that Mr. Don Ginger is gone (may he rest in peace), perhaps there is room for someone new.

The Common Documentation License (CDL) is a copyleft license for written works (specifically documentation for software) released by Apple Computer, Inc. Like most documentation licenses, this license is not released under it's own terms, and in fact does not allow itself to be added to or modified in any way. The license claims this is to "preserve consistency". Because of this, I did not include any hard links or pipe links within the quoted document below as that would be considered a non-verbatim copyI am not a lawyer, here are some interesting points, including my interpretation of the license:
